Weather reached a balmy 7 degree Centigrade yesterday. I had a little extra time so I thought I would get out and do some running. I hadn't been out since around Christmas when I was gung-ho to try the new Garmin 305. Shortly after winter happened. Since then I have maybe put down two or three treadmill sessions on my free gym day.
I have no trouble being out running in the cold, but since I run in vibram five fingers now the cold is actually a non option. Or at least an easy enough excuse to not run.
With the 7 degrees I thought it was a good idea to head out. In the shade it was still a little chilly, but in the sun it was very nice. I strapped the Vibrams on and set the garmin for 10 reps of 500m run with one minute rest. I didn't want to over do it, but I wanted to run an ok amount as well.
I didn't break any speed records, but I racked up nearly 6km in 43mins and ended at a park. I also brought a jump rope with me, cause I am weird like that. The park was nice and 99% clear of snow with dry ground. It sports four soccer fields, two of which are 50m between posts. I set the water bottle at 25m and went back to the start. I did a quick jump rope warm-up and then started sprinting.
I was unsure of my sprint fitness level so I put down 5 at 25m just top see. I had also never sprinted in the Vibrams before so I wasn't really sure what to expect. On grass at least sprinting in the vibrams was awesome. Easily the most comfortable sprints I have run. Confidence gained I finished the last 5 sprints with the 50m distance I was averaging about 10 seconds per 50.
After finishing those I picked up the jump rope and did a set of Tabata ropes and then wandered home.
All in all it was an excellent workout on a day I didn't really have anything planned.
The only regret is I had thought about taking the TRX with me but didn't. Sad.
